Located in the north west corner of the country, Minho is a green and lush province and one of the most traditional in Portugal. Consisting of green pasture-lands and forests of cedar and chestnut, many say it's Portugal's best kept secret, which is favoured by celebrities looking for peace and quiet. Stately homes and manor houses converted into bed and breakfast accommodation make Minho an ideal location for a weekend break.
The closest airport is located in Porto, the city of port wine. It is the gateway to exploring the north, as all major highways fan out from Porto. A car is the best way to see the north if time is short. If you depend on public transportation you can visit some of the major centres by bus and rail. All the major train routes originate in Porto and then go north to such centres as Barcelos, Viana do Castelo and Valença do Minho with branch lines connecting Guimarães and Braga, the regions capital.
